How Many Acres Is a Football Field? ~1.32 Acres.

To get this number, we do math. Let's find the area of a field using length × width, then convert that area into acres.

Football Field Dimensions (Length × Width)

Length (end to end)
Football Field: 100 yards
End Zones: 10 yards each (20 yards total)
Total = 120 yards = 100 + 10 + 10

Total Length: 120 yards
Total Width: 53⅓ or 53.33 yards
Total Area: 120 yards × 53.33 yards = 6,399.999

The total area is ~6,400 yards²

We are doing 2D math now, so we'll use yards² (square yards) instead of just yards.

More Math (Converting yards² to Acres)

We have a playbook that tell us that 1 acre = 4,840 yards², so we can calculate the amount of acres by dividing our total area (6,400 yards²) by 4,840.

1 acre = 4,840 yards²
1 field = 6,400 yds²
6,400 yds² ÷ 4,840 yds²  ≈ 1.32 acres

Therefore: 1 football field ≈ 1.32 acres

Square Footage (Bonus)

Square feet (ft²) is used more often than square yards (yds²) in the U.S. To calculate this, we have to convert our original dimensions to feet from yards.

1 yard = 3 feet

Length = 120 yards × 3 = 360 feet
Width = 53.33 yards × 3 ≈ 160 feet
Area = 360 ft × 160 ft = 57,600 sq ft

Square Meters (Bonus 2)

Only in America 🇺🇸, do we use yards and feet. The rest of the world uses the metric system so they would measure with meters and square meters (m²). To convert, use the below:

1 yard = 0.9144 meters

Length = 120 yards × 0.9144 = 109.73 meters
Width = 53.33 yards × 0.9144 ≈ 48.77 meters
Area = 109.73 m × 48.77 m ≈ 5,350 m²
