What is a photochromic visor? Also called a transitional visor, or just a transitional, these are visors that become tinted in bright sunlight and become clear in low sunlight or stadium lights.

The best of both worlds.

Clear visors are best for man-made light, while tinted visors are best for sunlight.

But with photochromic visors, you don't have to choose. It adapts to the environment, ensuring the best vision wherever you are. All while looking sleek in the process.

From fashion to footballers.

Photochromic lenses are commonly used in sunglasses, ski/snowboarding visors, motorcycle helmets, and now—for football.

Here at SHOC, we're proud to have engineered the first photochromic visor for our football athletes. You can check it out here.

How it works

UV light hits molecules embedded in the visor and snaps them from a compact, clear shape into a flattened one that absorbs visible light, making it look dark.

When the UV goes away, heat lets them relax back to the clear shape — which is why they darken fast, clear slowly, and go darker in cold weather.

The Problem: Light Changes

Your Vision Shouldn’t.

Every football player has felt it.

  • The blinding sun in your eyes during warmups
  • Sharp glare bouncing off the helmets and turf
  • Shadows move and slowly creep in as the game goes on

A standard visor forces you to choose:

  • Use a clear visor → great at night, brutal in sunlight
  • Use a tinted visor → solid in the sun, risky (or illegal) under lights

Enter the Transition/Photochromic Visor

We've come up with an industry-first solution so you don't have to compromise. A transition visor—also known as a photochromic lens that adapts in real time.

  • Bright sun → darkens automatically
  • Low light → returns to near 100% clear
  • No swapping. No guessing. No drop-off in vision

This isn’t just convenience; it's control over your game, and why the Friday Night Lights SHOC Visor could be your Competitive Advantage

1. Consistent Vision = Faster Reactions

When your eyes don’t have to adjust, your brain processes faster.

That means:

  • Cleaner reads
  • Faster cuts
  • Better ball tracking

Milliseconds matter. Vision consistency wins them.

2. No Halftime Adjustments

Players using traditional visors are constantly managing gear:

  • Swapping visors
  • Wiping glare
  • Dealing with fog or darkness

With a transition visor, you lock in once and stay locked in.

3. Game-Ready From First Snap to Last

Practice at 3 PM in full sun. Kickoff at 7 PM with low sunlight. Finish under full stadium lights with no sunlight. Our Friday Night Lights transition visor covers the entire spectrum without ever becoming a liability.

4. Legal Clarity When It Matters

Leagues like the NCAA, NFL, and most high school associations restrict heavily tinted visors.

A transition lens solves that:

  • Clear when it needs to be
  • Dark when it should be

No penalties. No forced changes.

5. The SHOC Difference: Built for Players Who Don’t Compromise

The SHOC Friday Night Lights visor isn’t just a gimmick—it’s built for real performance.

  • Photochromic lens tech that reacts instantly to UV exposure
  • Optical clarity that stays sharp in all conditions
  • Game-tested durability for high-impact environments
  • One visor. Every condition.

This is the one visor that can replace your entire rotation. Our SHOC Visors are the best-fitting universal visor in the game today. We fit ALL current TOP helmets. Light, Axiom, Speedflex, Schutt F7 all variations, and the Vicis Zero 1 and Vicis Zero 2 as well. With the SHOC Friday Night Lights visor, you now have a visor for every helmet and every light situation.

6. Who Needs a Transition Visor?

Short answer: Anyone who has sensitivity to Sunlight and is serious about game performance.

But especially:

  • Wide receivers & DBs tracking the ball through changing light
  • Quarterbacks need consistent vision at all times
  • Linebackers reacting in chaos where clarity matters most

If your position relies on reaction speed, this isn’t optional—it’s an edge.

7. The Bottom Line

Football is unpredictable.

Lighting shouldn’t be.

From practice reps to **Friday Night Lights moments, transition visors eliminate the guesswork and give players one thing that actually matters:

Clear vision. All game long.
